Trailhead about 4 miles north of the Big
Sky turnoff, at the "green bridge".
Nice spot for a one night backpack. Trout in
Moon Lake, lots of grayling in Deer Lake.
3200' vertical climb to Deer Lake. Trail in
good shape with a couple of recently repaired bridges.
Whortleberries ripe and still a few
wildflowers blooming.
Not crowded, but enough people that I felt
comfortable even with the "Bears in area" sign at the
trailhead. Always carrying 'heat' (pepper spray).
Date: August 25-26, 2012, a very dry year.
